Family :
Alfred Ralph Nethersole was born in Deal in Kent, 1867.
His father John was a farmer and wine merchant (in 1871 census). Like John, Alfred R attended Cambridge University - he started in 1887 and was not attached to a college.
Three of his brothers also studied there. He was commissioned in the Royal Scots Fusilers in 1888, then joined the Indian Army the same year.
When he died, his UK address was 49a Loughton Grove, Sydenham, Kent. His widow was Marian Alfreda Cairns Nethersole.

Egypt was the base for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force which was engaged in the region, primarily against the Turks. In the early stages of the war Egypt was threatened by Turkish advances towards Suez which were defeated and the Turks retreated to Palestine. Most of the effort of the MEF was thereafter directed towards operations in Palestine and Syria. Many of those buried and commemorated in Egypt succumbed to wounds, disease or were army victims of naval actions in the region.
Detail :
On 30th December 1915 SS Persia, (built 1900, 7,974 grt), was torpedoed and sunk in 34.10N, 26.00E by a torpedo from German U-Boat U 38, 71 miles SE by S from Cape Martello, Crete. She was carrying passengers and general cargo from London to Marseilles & Bombay, owned by Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co Ltd - London. A total of 334 crew and passengers lost their lives. Nethersole was one of the lost.

Alfred was a Lieutenant when he was initiated into Lodge of Perfect Unanimity in Madras in 1893. He went on to join Lodge St. George on the 28th December, 1894 and then also The Waltair Lodge on 28th February, 1896 when he was Adjutant of his unit. He was a Past Master of his lodge.
