George signed up and attested into the 1st Border Regiment at the age of 18 years in January, 1893 and became 3859, Private Hemmett.
Promoted Corporal 30th October 1896.
Served in the Boer War, South Africa.
Promoted to Sergeant 15th December 1904 and then Colour Sergeant 7th April 1911.
Landed in India 1908.
Landed in Rangoon in 1910. Spent 5 days in hospital with Influenza.

Discharged from the colours on the 23rd January 1914 after 21 years service.

Detail :

At the time of his death on the 13th June 1916, he was serving as 22173, Colour Sergeant, 3rd Battalion, Border Regiment. He died at the Royal Bath Hospital, Harrogate and was granted a War Gratuity.
