Probate JACKSON Edmund of 13 Linskill-terrace North Shields master mariner died 16 April 1917 at sea Administration Newcastle-upon-Tyne 7 May to William Edmund Jackson marine engineer. Effects £1121 6s 6d.

The SS "Marden" (297 grt) was built in 1909 by Smith’s Dock and Co. Limited of North Shields for L.S. Carr and Co. of Newcastle. On April 16th, 1917, Marden, on a voyage from Tréport to Newcastle in ballast, she was shelled and sunk by the German submarine UB-36 (Harald von Keyserlingk) six miles North West from Cape Gris Nez, France. There was one casualty - Jackson.
