Action : France & Flanders

France & Flanders covers all the dates and corresponding locations which are outside the official battle nomenclature dates on the Western Front. Therefore the actions in which these men died could be considered 'normal' trench duty - the daily attrition losses which were an everyday fact of duty on the Western Front.

Archie enlisted in the AIF at Eumundi on 3 September 1917. He had previously applied but, being of small stature, he was rejected as understandard. He was taken on as a Private with the 21st Reinforcements 25th Battalion, Service Number 7089. His parents were listed as living at Oat Hill, Malpas, Cheshire, England.

Before leaving Eumundi, Archie was presented with a steel lined pocket book by Mr GH Cooke on behalf of the Eumundi Volunteer Send-off Committee.

After initial training at Enoggera, he was granted pre-embarkation leave 23rd to 27th October 1917. With his unit, he embarked on the SS Canberra on 16 November 1917. After a short stopover at Suez from 21 December, he embarked on the HMT Kashgar on 9 January 1918. He disembarked at Taranto in Italy on 21 January and after reaching Southampton, England where he disembarked on 30 January 1918, he trained at Fovant with the 5th Battalion. On the 23 April, Archie proceeded overseas from Folkestone for Etaples in France where he joined his unit on 26 April. He was taken on strength in the field on 6 May 1918.

Archibald Maltman McIntyre was killed in action by machine gun fire when a bullet penetrated his stomach on 4 July 1918 near Villiers Bretonneux.

The Queen Alexandra Lodge at Eumundi, Queensland was not part of the English Constitution for very long, it being consecrated in 1913 and then becoming part of the Grand Lodge of Queensland in 1920 as Lodge 231.

Archibald became a joining member of the Lodge on 21st October, 1916 coming from Lodge 897 of the Scottish Constitution. He was a 30 year old farmer, at the time, from Eumundi. His dual allegiance was completed by the presentation of an English Constitution Grand Lodge Certificate on 13th February, 1917. Sadly, just over a year later the contribution register shows that he was "Killed 4.6.18." He is the only member of the Lodge who appears to have become casualty to the Great War.

He is simply known as Archibald McIntyre in the Rolls of Honour, but the Lodge record shows a second name as 'Waltman' This is perhaps a mistake as other records show that his name may be Archibald Maltman McIntyre, a name which links back to the Australian Infantry and former resident of Eumundi. The date of death for the man is 4th July, 1918, a month after the masonic record. In all likelihood, this is our man.
