Action : The Final Advance in Flanders

Within five days the British Second Army had pushed the Germans back over the 1917 battlefield and were advancing on Courtrai. After action at Courtrai the advance continued into Belgium until the Armistice on 11th November.

Detail :

Second Lieutenant Deighton Torre Piggott M.C., 3rd Battalion, Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment. Attached 8th Battalion.

Atkinson's history of The Royal West Kent's mentions that the action which resulted in the award of the Military Cross took place in May 1918 when the 8th Battalion were in the St Emilie sector just north of Lens.

From the London Gazette of 16th September, 1918: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. A raid on the enemy's trenches, organised by the battalion, having been un- successful, and volunteers for a second attempt being called for, this officer at once came forward, and without preparation or previous examination of the ground led one half of the party, boldly penetrating along some 50 yards of the enemy's trenches, doing much damage and capturing two prisoners. His conduct throughout- was most fearless and the success of his section of the raiding party was chiefly due to his inspiriting leadership."

War Diary shows that on the 14th October 1918: " 'A'Coy pushed patrols into HAUSSY. 3 prisoners taken. 1 Section under Sgt BROWN went E out of SELLE river and was then heavily attacked. Sgt. BROWN and 1 OR missing. Lt PIGGOTT and Sgt ASHDOWN killed by shell fire in HAUSSY."

The news of his death appeared in the Gloucester Citizen on the 4th December, 1918 in the weeks following Armistice: "Second-Lieut. F.D.T. Piggott, M.C., - It is with regret that we have to announce that shortly before the close of hostilities the Law Union and Rock Insurance Company sustained another loss through the death of their West End Inspector, Second-Lieut. F.D.T. Piggott, who was killed in action."

The reason for the reported "F" as an extra initial in Deighton's name is unknown.
