Detail :

Walter Ramsey was born in Dundee and died aged 56, was married and resided at 258 St George's Road, Hull. The SS Vasco was on a voyage from Hull to Naples with general cargo and a crew of 17. She struck a mine in the English Channel, 10 miles W by S off Beachy Head and sank.All the crew were lost including the Master, William Donaldson, who was a member of the De La Pole Lodge No 1605. The mine was laid by German U-boat UC16.

An article appears, with his portrait photo in the Hull Daily Mail 29th November, 1916:- "CHIEF ENGINEER OF THE S.S. VASCO - Mr WALTER RAMSEY, R.N.R., chief engineer, lost with the steamer Vasco. His home was 277, South Boulevard. He leaves a widow and four children. Mr Ramsey had been 36 years with his firm, 33 of them as chief engineer. He was a member of the Humber Lodge of Freemasons."

37 year old Chief Engineer. "Lost at Sea Nov 1916." Walter Ramsey was initiated into freemasonry on 15th April 1897 into Humber Lodge No 57. In the same lodge he was passed (3/6/1897) and raised (13/9/1897).
