Born in 1891 in Shepherd's Bush, London the son of Charles Martin Schroder, He had an older brother, Charles Bernard b.1889 London, a younger sister, Louise b.1893 at Shepherd's Bush, and a younger brother Eric b.1899 Leytonstone, London.

Education & Career :

He was educated at Nottingham High School, admitted on 14th June 1900 aged 10 and leaving in Easter 1903.

Unit / Ship / Est.: 5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers 

1/5th Battalion August 1914 : in the Castle Armoury, Bury. Part of Lancashire Fusiliers Brigade, East Lancashire Division. 25 September 1914 : landed in Egypt. 5 May 1915 : landed on Gallipoli. 26 May 1915 : formation became 125th Brigade, 42nd (East Lancashire) Division. 28 December 1915 : landed on Mudros and proceeded to Egypt. 27 February 1917 : landed Marseilles and proceeded to the Western Front.

Action : France & Flanders 

France & Flanders covers all the dates and corresponding locations which are outside the official battle nomenclature dates on the Western Front. Therefore the actions in which these men died could be considered 'normal' trench duty - the daily attrition losses which were an everyday fact of duty on the Western Front.

Detail :

London Gazette shows his commission listed on 25th September 1915, to serve with 15th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. He joined his battalion in France on 27th July 1916 . He was reported wounded and missing 2nd December 1917 and subsequently reported killed on that date.

A report appears of him being missing, presumed dead appears in the Nottingham Evening Post on 16th July 1918 - "PRESUMED KILLED. Sec.-Lieut. H. D. Schroeder, Lancashire Fusiliers, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Schroeder, of Tavistock-drive, Nottingham, reported wounded and missing on December 2nd, is now presumed to have been killed on that date. He was educated at the Nottingham High School, and returned home from Canada in order to enter the army."

Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, but is commemorated at the University College Nottingham Officer Training Corps War Memorial, at St John The Evangelist War Memorial Carrington (as H.W. Schroder), Nottingham High School War Memorial and also as
Rushcliffe Lodge War Memorial, West Bridgford.

Noted to be Schroder with an umlauted O, so correctly Schroeder. His war service is shown in the contribution records and shown as "Killed in Action 2.12.17"
