Family :

Matthew Sharp, born c.1882 was the son of John C Sharp, a draper and clothier, in Rothesay and his wife, Christina W. Ferguson born Johnston, Renfrewshire. The couple, together with family lived at 6 Battery Place, Rothesay, Bute and by the time of the 1891 census, Matthew and his father were living at Mount Pleasant Road, Rothesay.

Unit / Ship / Est.: 2/7 London Regiment 

2/7th (City of London) Battalion Formed in London in September 1914. Moved in November to Burgess Hill. Moved to Norwich in May 1915 and formation retitled as 174th Brigade in 58th (2/1st London) Division. Moved on to Ipswich next month, then Stowmarket and Sudbury and then to Sutton Veny in July 1916. 25 January 1917 : landed at Le Havre. 6 February 1918 : absorbed by 1/7th Bn at Domart.

Action : France & Flanders 

France & Flanders covers all the dates and corresponding locations which are outside the official battle nomenclature dates on the Western Front. Therefore the actions in which these men died could be considered 'normal' trench duty - the daily attrition losses which were an everyday fact of duty on the Western Front.

Detail :

Matthew became a 2 Lieut. in the London Reginent and died of wounds on 11 February 1918 aged 36. His parents at the time of his death were given as John C and Janet Sharp of Rothesay, Bute. Matthew had been awarded the Military Cross.
