"2/4th Battalion Formed at Salisbury Plain in September 1914 as a home service (""second line"") unit. Became part of 2/1st Hampshire Brigade in 2nd Wessex Division. 13 December 1914 : sailed for India. On 29 April 1917 left for Egypt, landing at Suez. 15 May 1917 : attached to 233rd Brigade in 75th Division. May 1918 : left the Division and moved to France, arriving Marseilles 1 June 1918. 5 June 1918 : attached to 186th Brigade in 62nd (2nd West Riding) Division. "

Action : The Battles of the Marne 1918 

20 July - 2 August 1918. French intelligence reports suggested a weakness in the German position on the Marne and accordingly two British Divisions were ?loaned? to the French to help their attack. The outcome was entirely successful and the Germans were driven back about four miles. The British Divisions (51st Highland and 62nd West Riding) suffered about 6000 casualties

Initiated into Blagdon Lodge No. 659 in 1910, where he is listed as a 21 year old Student of 20 Stanley Stree, Blyth. He resigned 19th December, 1913 probably at the end of his schooling and moving to the Birmingham area for work. He is already a joining member of Lodge of Emulation No. 1163, 27th June, 1912, where he is a 22 year old Soap Manufacturer resident of Birmingham. War Service is shown after which he is noted "Killed in Action July 20th 1918."
