Early Life :

Son to Charles Loius BONTE and Flore Victoire CLARISSE and born 1881 in Tourcing, Northern France. Wool merchant. 4 older siblings: Albert (1870), Georges (1871), Berthe Yolande Flore (1873) and Gabrielle

Service Life:

Campaigns:

Unit / Ship / Est.: French Army

Action : France & Flanders

France & Flanders covers all the dates and corresponding locations which are outside the official battle nomenclature dates on the Western Front. Therefore the actions in which these men died could be considered 'normal' trench duty - the daily attrition losses which were an everyday fact of duty on the Western Front.

French Government memorial records show that Fernand was recruited at Lille and was deployed as a Lieutenant and part of the 362nd Regiment of French Infantry. Service No. A75456. He was reported missing in action.

Detail :

Rising Sun Lodge No 1401 was warranted in April 1872 in Japan. Japan entered the Great War as early as 23 August 1914 as one of the allies. Brother Fernand Charles Louis Bonte (recorded 'Boute' in the GL records of the fallen) was French. Born in 1881 in Tourcoing in the North of France, he was a merchant and a foreign trade consultant in Kobe. He had married in 1909 in France and was a resident in Japan at least between 1906 and 1913. In his early thirties, with two children, Andre and Madeleine (also the name of his wife), he was well established in his profession. He was initiated in January 1907, passed the following month and raised one month later. He held no office in the lodge. If the speed in which brethren were put through the three degrees is any indication of a shortage of recruits, it is probable that he was not actively seeking office. He must have returned to Europe to join the French army at the start of the war as he fell in 1915. Of the manner of his death, nothing has come to light. French army records are not of much assistance. LA BASSEE Monument to the Dead; Fernand appears on this monument together with a Jules Boute (brother?). This will be investigated in view of the doubt over the spelling of his surname. Additional research by Paul Corsen, Hong Kong
