Early Life :

For an in depth piece of research into the life of Karl Schwerzel / Karl Vincent see this Word Document (.docx 30Kb). The document shows the effect of anti-German sentiment and details the involvement of MI5.

Charles was born Karl Vincent Schwerzel and was born c.1883 in the UK to Czech parents. His father Alexander was a Furrier. He married Elsa (nee Fischer), a German national having been born in Hanover, at St. John's Church in Putney on the 15th June, 1909. Both were living at 21 Cambalt Road, Putney. They had one daughter, born 1910, Beryl Iris.

By the time of the 1911 census, he was employed as a manufacturing furrier with the family now resident at 36 Kenilworth Court, Putney. This was an apartment block and in future years he is seen resident in the same block, but at number 17.

This being true, Carl was killed in action on the 17th October, 1918, with less than a month prior to Armistice. He was a 2nd Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion, East Kent Regiment.

Charles Vincent is the name listed as an entry in the 1921 Book, but he cannot be found in the lodge contribution records as a search, because he was initiated as Karl Vincent Schwerzel and changed his name to Charles Vincent shortly after the commencement of hostilities. It is unsurprising that such a name, anti-German sentiment, would have put him in danger of reprisals.

The ledger for the Lodge at the United Grand Lodge of England show that he was a 32 year old [Furrier], resident at Putney, South West London. One year of war service [w.s] is recorded showing for Charles in the 1918 column, followed by the final anntoation "Killed i/a 17th Oct, 1918."

With grateful thanks to Stephen Perry PM Hampden Lodge.
