Soldiers in the Great War show that he was officially accepted as having died in Germany on the 14th August 1917. Died as Prisoner of War from Pneumonia associated with Influenza at Merseburg, Germany.

Probate shows: WAINE William Frederick of 84 Kemble-street Prescot and of Compton House Whiston both in Lancashire trooper Household battalion 2nd Life Guards died 14 August 1917 in Germany Administration (with Will) Liverpool 10 March to Gladys Mary Waine spinster. Effects £744 6s. 10d.

Records of the United Grand Lodge of England show that William died as a Prisoner of War in September 1917. In the records of Starkie Lodge, where he is recorded as a joining member 7th December 1916, it shows "Died 1916 - Secy unable to give exact date."
