Action : The Battle of Amiens and associated actions

8 August - 17 August 1918. This was the battle that turned the tide of the German advance and started the Allied advances that were to culminate in the Armistice three months later. The impact of the defeat at Amiens on German morale cannot be overstated ? they had done all they could yet still the allies, particularly with US troops starting to be deployed to effect, had absorbed everything and were still capable of attacking and beating them.

Born Britain, Living Brisbane, Widdower, no children. Enlisted 17 March 1917 aged 42. Had previously been rejected as medically unfit. From 2/4/18 to 4/5/18 attended musketry course in Tidworth, passed with distinction as Lewis Gunner. Embarked from Folkestone 9/7/18. Memo in file: ...was killed instantly by a MG bullet in the face. He was buried by members of his Company and a cross erected. Buried at 62D SE. X 10.b File shows that his mother wrote on June 13th 1919 asking for information following news 9 months earlier that he had sustained a wound. In fact there was no such advice. Instead his mother was recovering from illness when news of his death was delivered and his sisters decide not to tell her. A clergyman was sent to see them and cautioned that at some point the truth would come out but clearly by June 1919 the mother remained unaware of the truth. By 4th August she knew the truth. In June 1923 she asks for information on where he is buried, but he has no known grave. see file; http://mappingouranzacs.naa.gov.au/list-name.aspx?name=warde
