Son of Charles, a Colliery Machine Engineer and Mary Almond of Sunderland. In 1891 they were living at 60 Rother Avenue, Sunderland.

Married in 1910 to Frances Elizabeth of Gainsborough Lodge, Frinton-on-Sea. At the time of the 1911 census they had gained a son, Charles and were resident at 14 Queen Anne's Gardens, Bush Hill Park, Enfield. Also present at this address was Morag Neilson, a Scottish Nurse and Elizabeth Thompson, domestic servant.
