At the time of the 1911 census, Walter was living at 31 Hingnar Street, Shoeburyness with his wife Margaret. He is a Master Gunner of the Royal Garrison Artillery.

Included in this are wartime deaths resulting from, for example, theSpanish Influenza pandemic and its associated pneumonia problems and other attributions such as age and exhaustion. Walter joined Mount Everest Lodge No. 2439 on the 29th May 1909 and, in doing so, joined the English Constitution. His mother lodge is assumed to be No. 1031 of the Scottish Constitution as listed in the ledgers of the United Grand Lodge of England. At this time he was a Quarter-master Sergeant, resident of Katapahar.

A year later, 26th October, 1910 he was based at the Royal Artillery barracks at Shoeburyness and was seen to have joined St. Andrews Lodge, listed as "Military." The contribution record show that he "Died 9.11.16."
