Early Life :

Thomas Henry Dawson was born in 1878 in Auckland.

A Major in the Auckland Infantry Battalion, he attended King's College and then Auckland University College (now University of Auckland). He was officer in charge of the College Rifles.

Dawson served in the Boer War from 1900-1902 and was a "highly esteemed member of the Auckland Rugby Union."

He married Ida Kathleen in 1909 He embarked from Wellington between 16 Oct 1914-3 December 1914, leaving his wife in Remuera and his job as a solicitor.

He was gassed and wounded but survived the war and in January 1918 he was decorated with a Distinguished Service Order.

On 7 August 1925 Ida and Thomas were divorced, she pleaded 'desertion for three years'.

Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. Stories of those who did survive are included as part of this site, especially those with high gallantry awards, those included against an external rolls of honour and those who had a distinguished career in wartime and military leaderhip.
