Detail :

144418, 2nd Lieutenant Harry Oswald Schofield, Royal Horse Artillery.

He was awarded the Military Cross. London Gazette 1st award LG:30915/24 Sep 1918(C)

His name appears in the Sussex Agricultural Express 21st April, 1933, showing his success in the political arena: - " Mr. H.O. Schofield, of High-street, Rye has been returned unapposed to the Rye Town Council to fill the vacancy caused by ... Rye branch of the British Legion and, during the great war, when he served with the Artillery, was decorated witht he Military Cross. He is a keen Freemason."

He became Mayor of Rye in 1949. An article portraying news and nostalgia of the Rye locale publishes: "One might wonder why Rye had so many grocers, but some of them supplied the shipping, so in the mid 30s. we find F Jarrett and H O Schofield with substantial sized grocery shops at 92 and 97 High Street, and there were others around the town. Schofield had recently taken over Vennells and in 1949 Harry Oswald Schofield was asked to be Mayor for the last year of the 1940s and he agreed just for the one year. I don’t remember how any one heading a big business can devote so much time in our interests but they often do, so our thanks to the local shopkeepers, although many have retired. I don’t remember anything spectacular happening during that year."

His Probate records shows the conclusion to his life: "SCHOFIELD Harry Oswald of 97 High Street Rye Sussex died 10 November 1960 at Rye Hospital Sussex Probate London 23 February to Oswald William Schofield grocer. Effects £7524 1s. 3d."

Although it is known that Harry was a Freemason, his records are still not in the public domain, so he is more than likely to have been initiated after 1921.
