Service Life:

Campaigns:

Unit / Ship / Est.: 11th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery

11th France, 21 April 1915

Action : The Battle of Amiens and associated actions

8 August - 17 August 1918. This was the battle that turned the tide of the German advance and started the Allied advances that were to culminate in the Armistice three months later. The impact of the defeat at Amiens on German morale cannot be overstated ? they had done all they could yet still the allies, particularly with US troops starting to be deployed to effect, had absorbed everything and were still capable of attacking and beating them.

Initially a member of the London Volunteer Rifles and Royal Naval Reserve (Royal Naval Division) Service Number: AA1529 , he manned heavy anti aircraft guns defending London from air attack. After service in France from 27-06-16 he became a 2nd Lieutenant in the RGA from 01-07-17. There followed a temporary attachment to the RFC before posting to a Siege Battery of the RGA. He had been in action almost constantly since the German Spring offensive in 03-18, until the allies began to advance once more. [Adrian Lee]

Edward ARNISON is mentioned in the LONDON GAZETTE, 21 JULY, 1917 when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on the Royal Garrison Artillery, effective 1/7/1917.

The news of his death is reported first in the Penrith Observer 27th August, 1918: "Second-Lieut. Edward Burra Arnison, son of the late Mr. Robert Arnison, Sheffield and formerly of Penrith, died of wounds received in action in France on the 18th inst. Lieut. Arnison early in 1915 joined the R.N.V.R., but in February, 1917, he entered a R.G.A. Cadet School, and on the completion of his course was granted a commission. Last March being posted to a siege battery he went to the Western Front, where he has been serving until his death."

A further report in the Chelmsford Chronicle on the 13th September, 1918: "Sec.-Lt. Edward Burra Arnison, R.G.A., killed in action on August 18, made his home cheifly with his brother, Lt. Rowland Arnison, at Fan-Foel, Oak Hill Gardens, Woodford."
