Action : Natural Causes 

Natural causes is attributed those deaths due to causes that were not directly associated with the war. Included in this are wartime deaths resulting from, for example, theSpanish Influenza pandemic and its associated pneumonia problems and other attributions such as age and exhaustion. It also groups those who through Post Traumatic Stress committed suicide as a result of their experiences.

Enlisted for service starting is engagement with the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman J.72028 on the 17th June 1917. At the time of his death, William was part of the crew of HMS Onyx which was originally completed as a torpedo gunboat, but converted to become a "submarine depot ship" prior to WW1, a base ship at Torbay. Prior to this he was aboard Vivid I (June-December 1917) and Vivid III (December 17- September 1918).

"Died from disease" which is elaborated on in the service record showing "Influenza and Pneumonia" at the R.N. Hospital, Chatham.

Probate record: ACKLAND, William of Honiton, Devonshire - Able Seaman, Royal Navy - Died 29th October 1918 at the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth. Probate 30 December to Flossie Alice Ackland, widow. Effects £744 10s. 7d.

He is buried in St. Michael's Churchyard in Honiton, Devon.

The 1921 book the Roll of Honour only shows a W. Ackland recorded. With these parameters there are too many Acklands, but the registers of the United Grand Lodge of England for Lodge of Perseverance show that this is William Ackland, who is int he register is annotated as "Died 1st November 1918", and further as a 22 year old Farmer from Branscombe. The Lodge is located at Sidmouth.
