Educated privately he had a gift for languages. he spoke Persian, Chinese, Russian, Urdu, Hindustani, Punjabi and French.

At the start of the war it was important to bring Regular Battalions back from their 'Imperial Policing' role in India and the FarEast. These troops were replaced by Territorial and other Garisson troops.

He was killed near Darrah Khaziuah on 15 April 1915 whilst single handedly protecting a valuable caravan from robbers.
