8th (Service) Battalion Formed at Lancaster in October 1914 as part of K3 and attached to 76th Brigade, 25th Division. Landed in France 27 September 1915. 15 October 1915 : Brigade moved to 3rd Division.

Action : The Advance in Flanders 

18 August - 6 September 1918 The start of the pressure on German gains of Spring 1918 and the reoccupation of ground south of Ypres.

Lieutenant Horace Heptonstall BACKHOUSE, MC 8th The King?s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment The son of George Heptonstall Backhouse and Grace Backhouse of The New Inn, Ermington, Devon. He was a Victualler (Publican) who was Initiated on the 2nd December 1908;Passed 3rd February and Raised on the 7th April 1909. Killed in action on the 23rd August 1918 aged 33. He is buried in Douchy-les-Ayette British Cemetery, France, Grave Reference Plot 2, Row G.11 and he is Remembered on a Memorial in Ermington Parish Church.The Commonwealth War Graves Register lists him as BACKHOUS which is probably a typographical error. He was awarded the Military Cross.
