Family :

A search in the 1911 census for a 29 year old chef by the name of Charles GUILLAUME living in Manchester reveals a high probability match, of a man who was married to Alice, both French nationals and who were resident at 103 Rumford Street, Chorlton-cum-Medlock, Manchester together with son, Charles and three boarders, who were "Hotel Cooks".

Referring back to his marriage record to Alice, the index shows that Charles "Francois" and Alice "Helene" Guillaume (nee Emonet) were married in the UK in July 1907 at Chorlton. Slater's Directory lists him as a householder of 13 Cheltenham Street, Chorlton-cum-Medlock in 1909.

Tracing back, it is possible that, as a 19 year old, he was resident at 161 Shaftesbury Avenue, Holborn, perhaps renting accommodation and working as a "Cook" in one of the local establishments. Holborn being a hotbed of Freemasonry could be a moment in time which sowed the seed for Charles joining the fraternity.

Detail :

For the moment the trail runs cold. It has not been possible to link with a soldier's record for the Great War. Previously, this person was erroneously connected to Charles "Harold" GUILLAUME, leading to records which show him having died in the Middle East and connecting with parents from St. Hellier, Channel Islands.

The masonic record shows that "Charles GUILLAUME" was initiated into Droylsden Lodge in January 1913, passed and raised in consecutive months. He was resident in Longsight, Manchester at the time and his employment was as Chef. The final entry in the ledger shows "Died Feby 1917."

Only the name "Charles GUILLAUME" appears on the rolls of honour, so caution should be employed in tracing the man. Previously this record contained detail about a different soldier and a narrative created which was wrong. Starting at the masonic record, we look for a 29 year old chef, who was resident in Manchester in 1913 and who died February 1917.
