Action : The First Battles of the Somme 1918 and associated actions

21 March - 4 July 1918. The Battles of the Somme in 1918 were mostly concerned with stemming the German advance which started in March 1918 and which made considerable gains in the Somme/Arras sector. Utilising surplus troops which had become available following the surrender of Russia after the October Revolution, the Germans gambled on a massive campaign that could win the war in the west before the USA could bring its resources to bear. Initial gains were in places spectacular but eventually dogged resistance coupled with supply problems and sheer exhaustion closed down the battle. Other attacks were launched along the front to probe the Allied defences but the same pattern of initial gains followed by stalemate prevailed. British casualties were almost 345,000.

Detail :

190797 Gunner Arthur Cyril Rushworth, "C" Battery, 77th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.

From the Southport Visitor dated 23rd May 1918: "Husband of Mrs Rushworth, formerly of Shore Rd, Ainsdale, and son of Mr & Mrs Rushworth, Delamere Rd, Gunner Rushworth had been out in France for about six months with the R.F.A. The sad news of his death was conveyed in a letter from Gunner E Jones which stated: "I write these few words of sympathy as I happened to be in a village coming from the line, but going down the road I came across your husband so I looked to see if I knew him. He had papers and his book, so I found out his brigade and told my Captain who forwarded on his letters and stuff we could get, as he was very badly hurt and must have been killed instantaneously, because the place where he was lying had been shelled. It being our turn off from the guns, my chum and myself went and dug a grave for him just outside the village, at the back of a crucifix. We both send our deepest sympathy to you in your sudden bereavement.""
