Family :
Sidney was born 1884 in Rickmansworth, son of Charles and Fanny Ferguson Brightman (nee Roberts), of 6, Station Road, Watford. He attended Watford Grammar School from October 1894 to July 1898. He married Alice Beer on 11th October 1906 at St Andrew’s, Watford; they had one child. .They resided at 10, Westland Road, Watford. Herts. Alice never remarried; she died 1932 in Watford aged 51, and was buried 18 March in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Palestine is a generic term to cover actions in the region now consisting of Sinai, Israel, Jordan, Syria and Aden and involved operations against the Turks. Once the security of the Suez Canal was assured in 1915 the focus shifted to the area now within the post 1967 borders of Israel. In 1917 there were three battles at Gaza, which enabled the capture of Jerusalem in December. In 1918 the campaign continued north into the Jordan Valley then towards Damascus. The Armistice with Turkey was signed on the 31st October 1918.

2nd Lieutenant, 521st (London) Field Company, Royal Engineers.
He was gazetted in January 1915 as Second Lieutenant to the Northamptonshire Regiment. Recalled in July to supervise building of munitions works. Went to Egypt October 1917, killed in action in Palestine.
For his service he was awarded the Victory and British War medals, which were sent to his widow of Watford.
