His funeral was recorded in the Surrey Advertiser 23rd June, 1917: "THE LATE MR. S.H. CHAPLIN. As announced last Saturday, Mr. Sydney Herbert Chaplin, of Leatherhead, was killed in the air raid on London on June 13th. The deceased was an old and popular member of the 10th Batt. Surrey Volunteer Regiment. He was a keen soldier, a good rifle shot, and had done much to promote the musketry training of the Leatherhead Platoon. On Sunday, June 17t, on the occasion of a march through the Bookhams, under the command of Capt. G. Rowland Blades, an impressive memorial servic was conducted in Little Bookham Church by the Rev. T. Vernon, himself a keen member of the battalion. Thy hymn, "On the resurrection morning," was sung during the service, and after an impressive address by the Rector, three verses of the National Anthem were sung and the Dead March in "Saul" was rendered by the band. On Monday, June 18th, a well attended memorial service was held at All Hallows Church, Lombard-street, London, E.C., when the battalion was represented by Lieut. and Quartermaster H. Hewgill Lansdowne, Sec-Lieut. H. Leslie Dixon , of the Royal Flying Corps, formerly musketry officer of the battalion, was also present."

Sydney is buried in South Hayling cemetery in Hampshire.
