Service Life:

Campaigns:

Unit / Ship / Est.: 8th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry

Action : France & Flanders

France & Flanders covers all the dates and corresponding locations which are outside the official battle nomenclature dates on the Western Front. Therefore the actions in which these men died could be considered 'normal' trench duty - the daily attrition losses which were an everyday fact of duty on the Western Front.

Detail :

He enlisted on October 8th 1914, as Private, in the Sportsman's Battalion, 1/24 Royal Fusiliers. He obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th Battalion KOYLI Feb 21st 1915, and promoted to Lieutenant July 1916, Acting Captain August 1916. Awarded the MC. Served in France Aug 1915 to Jan 1917. Died of Wounds January 31st, 1917. On 23rd January 1917, the 8th King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry attempted a trench raid at Sanctuary Wood, Ypres. This raid was unsuccessful resulting in 1 killed,40 wounded and 4 missing. Captain Donahoo, who had not been involved in the original raid, volunteered to go into No Man's Land to search for the missing men. Almost immediately he was spotted by an alert German sniper and shot. He was recovered to the trench but died a week later. Captain Donahoo was an extremely loved and popular officer whose passing was commented upon in the 23rd Division's History.

24-1-1915
Captain Donahoo, who had not taken part in the raid, volunteered to go out into no man's land the next day in an attempt to recover the missing men. He was spotted by a sniper who shot and seriously wounded him. He was rescued from no man's land and was evacuated to 10 Casualty Clearing Station where he succumbed to his wounds on the 31st of January.
