Son of William and Charlotte Oughterson of Greenock, Renfrewshire. For some time lived at Greenock, Scotland.
Married June 1883.
He had a daughter, Charlotte Annie born 1885.

Natural causes is attributed those deaths due to causes that were not directly associated with the war. Included in this are wartime deaths resulting from, for example, theSpanish Influenza pandemic and its associated pneumonia problems and other attributions such as age and exhaustion. It also groups those who through Post Traumatic Stress committed suicide as a result of their experiences.

He retired circa 1908 where Harts Army List shows James as a substantive Colonel with the post of Assistant Director of Supplies and Transport, Aldershot Command. The Peerage shows that he gained the rank of Colonel in the 18th Royal Irish Regiment.

Detail :

He died in 1916 after a full career and is buried in Putney Vale Cemetery, and his death does not apparently appear connected to the war effort, but doesnt seem likely that this "old soldier" would have participated or contributed nothing.

The Broad Arrow of 3rd January, 1917 shows: "Royal Irish Regiment (18th).- Col. C.J. Oughterson, Secretary to the County of London Territorial Force Association, died on the 10th ult., at his residence, Montrose, Wimbledon Park. Born in 1852, he joined the regiment in 1873, transferring subsequently to the Army Service Corps. He attained the rank of colonel in April 1903, and went on half-pay from the Staff in February 1908, retiring in the following April."

James entered the English Constitution from No. 1 Lodge Scottish Constitution on the 18th February, 1890 when he was garrisoned at Bridgetown, Barbados. His first E.C. lodge was St. Michael s Lodge No. 2253. He went on to join Aldershot Army & Navy 1971 22nd October 1896, whilst as a Major in the Army Service Corps and resident at Aldershot. Listed as a Past Master of Nil Labore Sine Lodge No. 2763, for which lodge he is recorded against the 1940 scroll. He became a member of this lodge, connected with the Army Service / Army Ordnance Corps on 3rd December, 1898.
