Action : Actions in Spring 1916

Actions in Spring 1916 covers a number of non specific actions on the Western Front in the period February to the end of June 1916. Much of this period concerned the build up to the Battle of the Somme, particularly the acclimatisation of the Service Battalions (Kitchener Volunteers) to trench routine. As the Battle of the Somme occupied the plans for 1916 no significant efforts were made in other sectors. Many of the casualties could be considered 'routine'. During the period December to June 1916 5845 British soldiers died in 'minor trench operations'.

In the Lodge records at the United Grand Lodge of England there are consecutive entries in the register of Cama Lodge. One for Cyril Aldin Smith and the other for Reginald Aldin Smith, however they are initiated one year apart, Cyril in 1913 and Reginald in 1914. Cyril is 10 years senior, so these are more than likely familial brothers. They share the same profession, listed as "Director of Boys" and are both resident in West London.

The similarities end in the contribution register. Whilst Reginald goes on to pay his dues until 1921 and beyond, Cyril's line has five years of Active / War Service which goes on to show "missing" in the 1919 column. The date of his death being 1916, it seems that the register is extra-ordinarily out from the official record.
