 Mike: On July 12th, 1917, Calliope, on voyage from Sevilla to Newport with a cargo of iron ore, was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-155 (Kapit?nleutnant Karl Meusel) in position 35?N-17?W, 150 miles North of Madeira. All 27 crew died.
